Joseph Eruka is an athletic, 6’8” big man who thrives at running the floor in transition, routinely finishes above the rim, dominates the offensive glass, and brings heaps of defensive versatility to the table.

Offense

Joseph Eruka is bouncy and aggressive. He runs the floor hard in transition to get himself great looks in the open floor. In the halfcourt, he sets good, hard screens that allow his guards to create advantages before quickly dashing to the rim. From there, he can finish lobs for alley-oop dunks or catch the ball on the roll and utilize craft to get a clean shot at the rim. Plus, he’s displayed budding vision as a playmaker out of the short roll, punishing taggers with well-timed passes to open shooters on the perimeter. Arguably his best skill is his offensive rebounding. Eruka averaged 3.7 offensive rebounds per 40 minutes during the FIBA U20 European Championships this summer. He skies off the floor and high points the ball, leading to frequent high-leverage second chance scoring opportunities for his team.

Defense

Eruka’s defensive output is both valuable and versatile. His positioning in drop coverage is excellent, as he frequently forces guards to toss up looping, deep floaters rather than allowing them to get to the rim. He also has the bounce to swat their shot if they try to take him to the rack. Beyond that, he does a great job of using his length and hands to take away potential passes to the roll man. Simply put, opponents have a hard time getting high-quality shots when Eruka is guarding in a ball screen. He may be even better in switch scenarios, as he’s exceptionally quick on the perimeter. He knows how to sit down in his chair and slide his feet. Off ball, he covers ground like a much smaller player, allowing him to close out both hard and on balance. Eruka’s motor on the glass shows up on this side of the floor, too. He secures position well around the basket while having the speed and tenacity to crash in from the perimeter.

Conclusion

Joseph Eruka does the dirty work well. He can finish inside, he takes pride in owning the glass, and he can guard in a variety of ball screen coverages. Beyond that, his athletic tools and growing level of feel give him a massive developmental runway. Eruka can produce right now, but he still has the potential to make significant growth in the coming years.
